About Duane J. Cargill (1939–2006)
Duane Cargill graduated from Springfield High School in 1959 where he earned letters in several sports. As a star fullback on the Millers football team, he earned the nickname the "Springfield Rifle." University of Oregon coach Len “Cas” Casanova personally visited Cargill and his mother at their home to ask Cargill to play football at the University of Oregon. This was the beginning of a lifelong friendship between Casanova and Cargill, whose love and support for University of Oregon Athletics and Oregon football would grow over time.
Cargill accepted Casanova's offer as well as a scholarship that allowed him to pursue a college education while playing the sport he loved. He played for the UO as a fullback wearing number 40 from 1960–1962. During his freshman year, he set a record for the most carries in a game with 43 carries, 172 yards, and four touchdowns, helping the Ducks earn a victory over Oregon State on October 29, 1959. Cargill held that record for 40 years until October 23, 1999, when Reuben Droughns achieved 45 carries in a game against Arizona. Cargill also had the honor of playing in several bowl games during his football career at the UO.
During his college years, he was also an active member of the Sigma Nu fraternity where he met many of his lifelong friends. After his time at the UO, Cargill stayed in Eugene and started Cargill Construction Company. In 1967, he married Barbara Reed, his wife of 39 years, and in 1970, they moved to Honolulu, Hawai‘i. He worked for several large construction companies, supervising commercial projects and also taught estimating and blueprint reading at Honolulu Community College. With that background, he started his own general contracting company, Western Engineering, Ltd.
Cargill was a loyal Ducks football fan. He and Barbara had season tickets since Autzen Stadium's inaugural season and would fly from Honolulu to attend games. In 2001, Cargill and the UO athletics department created the Duane J. Cargill Award, which is presented annually to the "most outstanding offensive back" for contributions on the playing field. Cargill was a board member of the UOAA Hawai‘i Ducks chapter, and it was important to him that a scholarship fund was set up for future Ducks.
By contributing to the Duane J. Cargill Memorial Scholarship Fund, you will be continuing this legacy of supporting current students from our area.
