Saddle up for a morning of Duck camaraderie at the University of Oregon Alumni Association’s annual Let ‘er Duck Breakfast! Enjoy a hearty “full cowboy” breakfast while reconnecting with fellow alumni and friends of the university.  

This year’s breakfast will feature an update from Nick Maggio, assistant director of wildfire technology at the Oregon Hazards Lab. Don't miss out on the chance to rope in new memories and celebrate together!

Dr. Nick Maggio

Oregon Hazards Lab, University of Oregon

Nick Maggio, PhD, serves as the assistant director for wildfire technology at the Oregon Hazards Lab (OHAZ) at the University of Oregon.He is dedicated to protecting communities across the Pacific Northwest by pioneering rapid wildfire detection, enhancing real-time situational awareness, and building resilient emergency communications networks. Through groundbreaking efforts such as AI-powered wildfire detection cameras, the ShakeAlert earthquake early warning system, the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network, and the Sage environmental monitoring network, OHAZ stands at the forefront of disaster mitigation and public safety.

Nick leads critical wildfire-related programs, including strategic planning, technology development, engineering innovation, stakeholder collaboration, and extensive field operations. Under his leadership, emerging technologies are rigorously tested, proven in the field, and deployed to frontline responders and public safety agencies, significantly reducing risks to lives and property.

Prior to his leadership role at OHAZ, Nick served as director of research advanced computing services at the University of Oregon, where he oversaw the university’s high-performance computing facilities, enabling groundbreaking research across multiple disciplines. His commitment to community safety, innovation, and academic excellence continues to make a profound impact at the UO and beyond.
